More signs of spring!!!!!

Here are more spring flowers and things. I am hoping we will plant some more today. After several days of wonderful warm weather it is cold this morning, low 50's. It is suppose to warm up.

My Hyacinth and Crocus are starting to bloom. I could not have those kinds of flowers in Florida so I am having fun. I planted these in September and will plant more next fall. Check out the Farmer's post just before this. We are still getting good eating out of the garden. So long until next time.

Cauliflower and Broccoli

This is the beginning of spring but also the winter crops are looking better and still producing.
This beautiful cabbage is called a carafex. It is a spiral and pyramidal in shape. This is a small cabbage and is meant for a smaller family. Two of us ate half as salad tonight. It weighs about 1/2 a lb or 250 gram.
This is the third or fourth day of broccoli that we have harvest. There are lots of little sprigs that come on the plant after the major head is removed. This is the greenest broccoli that I have every seen. Delicious too.
I noticed that there was some asparagus that just started coming up. So some broccoli and asparagus in a omelet with the salad meant that we ate 3 things from the garden to night.
I will have some spinach this weekend and many of the things we have planted are starting to come up.
One of the most amazing thing is that the cauliflower made it through the winter. These little plants are beautiful spirals of light yellow green. They are an Italian version and are called Verona. Once again I picked smaller varieties to fit in the garden and to be more suitable for feeding one or two people

So far this year I have 1.850 KG of produce to report which puts me way ahead of last year.

Signs of Spring!!!!!

Things are back to normal with everyone back on the farm. The picture is of my beautiful Amaryllis which brings color and comfort in February. We had Broccoli for supper from the garden and the spinach is going wild and is very good. We planted more seed in doors last night. I guess we will put some plants in the ground some time in March. Looking forward to a great gardening year.

The farmer and farmer's wife are gone for a few days. So the New farmer is taking care of things, let see if I can stay out of trouble?
We planted seeds out side this week-end as well as more in the pots inside. It was a beautiful week-end just a reminder of the good days coming. We had company here for a visit and had a Spinach salad from the garden ( in Feb. ), so good. Here are a couple of pictures, one is of the Rosemary that traveled from Florida, survived the trip, summer and winter and looks healthy. The other is of the new plantings. The fence is to keep out the wild life. Looking forward to good eating.

We are trying to push spring. We planted seeds last Saturday and some are all ready coming up as of yesterday. We had about 1 1/2 of snow last night so guess pushing is not working. I hope it warms up by week-end. Our bulbs are showing their little green tops. I am going to try to post a couple of pictures. I am hopeful.

New Farmer Signs On to Blog

We planted seeds today to start our garden for 2011. Some of the seeds are very small and in one case I am not sure if I have 2 kinds of lettuce or just one. The seeds look so much alike. We will put these under lights and when they are big enough will put in garden. The garden right now is very wet from all the rain. Looking forward to another good year.

Fresh Start: Starting Pots of Vegetables

The New Farmer has been anxious to start gardening. However, we continue to have wild weather. Ice earlier this week and a few snow flakes were coming down this morning when I went out to check on the plants.

Despite the tremendous cold there are still some broccoli and other winter greens that have made it through, probably because they are partially shielded by a hedge that is a wind break. Those cotoneaster have to be trimmed back severely each year but I think I will wait a few more weeks before I cut them back.
However, today was Week Minus 9 (which means 9 weeks before the last frost). Each week there is a plan to start either pots inside and/or plant/transplant outside into the garden.
We have spent time last week improving the soil with Black Kow compost, lime, blood meal and then tilled in all the improvements. The soil looks great.
On other news, The Farmer's Friend came over and helped with digging up the Fig tree saplings that were started last year. They were laid on the ground and covered with dirt. They put down fig tree roots where they were buried. So we took up the new saplings and put them into milk jug pots (thanks to our local Starbucks) and potentially have started 8 new fig trees that were shared with friends. The Farmer has been thinking about Figs since he has been sharing canned figs with friends and family.
The New Farmer will start adding her own posts to our blog this year.
